Description
Black color. Holds images that are 5 1/2 x 4 1/4 inches.
This is case #4 in Union Cases, by Krainik, Krainik & Walvoord (Rare). This is case #1-3R in 19th Century Photographic Cases and Wall Frames, by Paul Berg (Very Very Rare).
From Union Cases: "The commonwealth of Virginia honored her most illustrious son in a magnificent monument situated on the northwest corner of Capitol Square, Richmond. The Washington Monument was created by Thomas Crawford (1813 - 1857) in Munich, Germany over a period of eighteen years, at a cost exceeding $259,000. This dramatic monument consists of a gigantic bronze equestrian statue of George Washington atop a central pedestal. Surrounding the base of the pedestal are figures of six famous Revolutionary War era Virginians, allegorically representing their individual contributions: Thomas Jefferson as Independence, Patrick Henry as Revolution, George Mason as Bill of Rights, John Marshall as Justice, Thomas Nelson as Finance, and Andrew Lewis as COlonial Times. The monument (with vacant crypt) stands sixty feet high and has a base diameter of 86 feet. Although the completed Washington Monument was not unveiled until 1858, a year after Thomas Crawford's death, the casting of the equestrian statue established him as one of the nation's foremost sculptors. His major works include the sculptures on the pediment of the Senate wing of the United States Capitol, models for the bronze doors of the House wing of the Capitol, and the model for the gigantic figure Armed Liberty that crowns the Capitol dome. This Union case, based on Crawford's Monument, has long enjoyed popular interest. After the Civil War, cases with this design were used as presentation boxes to house copies of the Great Seal of the Confederacy. The design was also used by Scovill Manufacturing Company during the 1870s as a plastic decorative lid for a collar box.”
The consignor, Alex Novak, offered to split the hammer with the Daguerreian Society. This is a generous donation and greatly appreciated.
