Thomas Paines political activism in the late 18th-century was vitally important to many of the successes of the American Revolution. He was responsible for some of the most important propaganda pamphlets at the start of the war which inspired American rebels in 1776. Common Sense alone is considered the all-time best American pamphlet, in fact, John Adams is known to have said “without the pen of the author of Common sense, the sword of Washington would have been raised in vain.
Author Gilbert Vale wrote a biographical sketch on the life and political influence of Thomas Paine. Published simply under the title “Life of Thomas Paine”, this book contains commentary on his writings as well as his correspondence with George Washington. This book also contains references to other Paine biographies including Sherwin and Cheetham.
