New York: Currier & Ives, 1865 As Jefferson Davis flees in his wife's cloak with a sack of gold under his arm, he is chased by laughing Union soldiers: "It's no use trying that shift, Jeff, we see your boots!" Davis protests: "Let me alone, you blood thirsty villains. I thought your government more magnanimous than to hunt down women and children!" Peters 1654.
