1864-66 FOUR Civil War "United States Christian Commission" Printed Circulars & Final Anniversary Meeting
c. 1864 to 1866 Civil War to Reconstruction Period, Archive Collection of FOUR different "United States Christian Commission" printed circulars, Including the rare Program for their Final Anniversary Meeting, Held at the United States House of Representatives with Union General Meade as a Guest Speaker, Choice Crisp Near Mint.
Historic Civil War Archive of (4) different "United States Christian Commission" printed circulars, dated from 186 to 1866. Two were directed to Prof. M.L. Stoever (Martin Luther Stoever, D.D., 1820-1870, Lutheran educator & writer, Professor of Latin & History at Pennsylvania College).
Collection Includes:
1. Dec. 16, 1864 dated circular expressing their intention "to present to every vessel of war, hospital, and brigade in camp, a New Year's Gift Library of over One Hundred and Fifty Volumes, if the patriotic people of the Union will only divide their Libraries with our brave defenders" and seeking donations of all sorts of books, magazines and illustrated papers.
2. Dec. 31, 1864 dated circular to Rev. Stoever, asking him to send his photograph and autograph for an "imperial quarto album" to be presented to George H. Stuart, the Chairman of the U.S. Christian Commission, containing "the likenesses and autographs of all connected with the Commission".
3. Jan. 9, 1865 dated circular to Prof. Stoever announcing the Third Annual Business Meeting to be held in Washington City.
4. Scarce Final and Closing program for the "Fourth and Last Anniversary Meeting" of the U.S. Christian Commission, to be held at the Hall of the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington, D.C. on Feb. 11, 1866, featuring several notable speakers, including General George Meade and Rear Admiral Charles H. Davis.
A rarely encountered historic collection of contemporary Civil War era documentation of the organization and events.
