Second Edition of this collection of poems by Arabella "Belle" Bush (1828-1914), first published in 1865. Miss Bush was the co-principal of the co-ed, nonsectarian Belvidere Seminary, a noted Spiritualist, and spent her final years as a resident of the Shaker community of Mt Lebanon, New York. "Collection of poems about the Civil War, previously printed in 23 newspapers and magazines, including Godey's, Graham's, Saturday Evening Post, etc." - Mary L Richmond; Shaker Literature: A Bibliography; 135. Poems contained herein were also published in the Liberator, the National Anti-Slavery Standard, and the Banner of Light, reflecting Miss Bush's wide range of interests included women's rights, abolition, and unorthodox faith.
Here is the first stanza of "Not One Hath Died In Vain" concerning the Battle of Gettysburg: "Not a warrior went down to the grave in vain, Not one, not one,Of all the thousands in combat slain, By the deadly rain, The fearful, terrible, leaden rain, That hissed and thundered along the plain, When the fiends of war held a carnival, And Death was the guest that danced with all, On the fields of Gettysburg."
