Description
A PADDED TEXTILE PANEL
Late Qing dynasty
Framed and glazed, featuring padded textiles, silvered metal, paper, pigments, hair and brocade weave fabrics, composing an opera scene of officials and dignitaries gathering.
28 1/2 x 43in (72.5 x 109.3cm)
Footnotes:
清晚期 潮繡人物圖 鏡框
This distinctive style of padded textile art was most likely produced by Chaozhou School artists in the late Qing dynasty. Referred to as Trapunto or Stumpwork in the West and Oshi-e, or kiritori zaiku in Japan, the technique enlivens the work with a three-dimensional depth. Most frequently this technique is seen in small folding fans produced for export, however, this large panel is a rare survivor.
