Item Details
Description
**Originally Listed At $300**

East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. late 19th century CE. This is a beautiful hand woven and embroidered silk and brocade textile that was once a panel from a robe, perhaps a sleeve, that is mounted in a modern wood and glass frame. The panel consists of a brocade border of dark blue and silvery white threads in a foliate pattern, that surrounds a separate piece of cloth sewn to the center. The central rectangle is a beige hue that is delicately stitched with intricate garden themed patterns. The threads are a colorful array of blues, pinks, teal, greens, beige whites, and coppery metallic hues that create potted plants, blooming peonies, scholar stones, and other foliage. This piece is ready to be displayed and is protected in the custom gilt wood frame. Size (textile): 21.5" L x 10.5" W (54.6 cm x 26.7 cm); (frame): 23" L x 12" W (58.4 cm x 30.5 cm)

Scholar stones or gongshi, represented by the irregular blue shapes with empty circular patches, are rocks of a distinctive shape, color, and texture, with an appearance impressive enough to be deemed fitting for meditation in a scholar's studio or to display in a garden. Often these stones are naturally craggy, and cavity filled - hence the unembroidered white "holes" to represent the eroded surface the stones are prized for.

Provenance: private Littleton, Colorado, USA collection, between 1959 to 1962
