Description
A MASSIVE GREY LINGBI 'MOUNTAIN-FORM' SCHOLAR'S ROCK
Qing dynasty
The massive lingbi rock of light grey color with flecks of white calcite throughout, when viewed face on it sits squat like a compressed official's hat, the folds of the rock appearing to buckle under their own weight, when viewed end on, the rock appears angled and lifted diagonally upward and transforms into a majestic mountain, the steep sides displaying the ridges of the rock underneath, the pale hongmu stand in a typical Jiangnan style.
14 1/4in (36cm) high
Footnotes:
清 靈璧山子
Provenance:
Ian and Susan Wilson, San Francisco
Published:
Kemin Hu, The Spirit of Gongshi: Chinese Scholar's Rocks, 1999, no. 44, p. 62, where it is described as Ying stone
Nicholas Grindley, Ian and Susan Wilson Collection of Scholars' Rocks, Berkeley, 2009, no. 16
來源:
舊金山威爾遜伉儷(Ian & Susan Wilson)舊藏
出版:

Nicholas Grindley, 《怪石》,伯克利,2009年,圖版16
The Qing dynasty stand is a typical Jiangnan style stand of pale brown hongmu wood with some paler areas of sapwood raised on five short cabriole legs with a lower section with undecorated vertical walls and an upper section with undulating raised protrusions. The lip that borders the rock-receiving cavity is broad and flat to retain the distinct angle of the rock.
