Description

Group of (4) Satirical Anti-Confederate CDVs Depicting Jefferson Davis, Winfield Scott, and Others!

Cartes-des-visites, measuring between 2.25" x 3.25" and 2.25" x 3.5", n.p., n.d. A group of (4) CDVs satirizing Jefferson Davis and the Confederate States of America. Light toning and bumped corners to all. Very good condition. The lot includes:

1. "Robbery of the National Apple Orchard". Image shows a caricature of Jefferson Davis perched on a tree branch with Col. Elmer Ellsworth, the first Union officer to die in the Civil War, on the ground waiting for him. The caption reads "Col. Ellsworth: 'I say Jeff, drop those apples and come down'. Jeff. Davis: 'Are those the New York Fire Zouaves? Please don't let 'em shoot- I'll surrender.- I only wanted to be left alone". At the time of publication, the apples were meant to represent the Confederate States that had seceded.

2. "How to Cure Rebellion". Depicts Union soldiers loading a cannon, with the caption declaring "this is the pill/to cure or kill".

3. "Why Don't You Take It?". Possibly in reference to the Union's Anaconda Plan, the image depicts Jefferson Davis and Winfield Scott as dogs, with Scott snarling and Davis' tail between his legs. Copious rations and weapons are on Scott's side, including a piece of meat declaring it as 'Union Beef', while Davis' side has only cotton. Davis and Scott had a long-standing feud, going back as far as the Mexican American War.

4. "The Result." Shows Jefferson Davis on his knees upon surrendering and a Union soldier, possibly leader of the Wilson raid that captured Davis, James Harrison Wilson, holding him by a leash. Caption reads "Jeff Davis. Billy Wilson. 'Othello's Occupation's Gone".
