1847 Wabash and Erie Canal Principal Stock Certificate
A Wabash and Erie Canal Stock certificate, Indianapolis, Indiana, dated December 13, 1847, No. 131, issuing $500 principal stock at a rate of 5% per annum to N.M. Rothschild & Sons, London. Signed by the Treasurer, Auditor, and Agent. On verso Rothschild assigns the stock to George Paton, dated November 15, 1848. With flattened folds, creasing, and light toning and soiling throughout. Minor edge chipping. Overall very good.1p, measuring 11.25" x 8.5".
The Wabash and Erie Canal was a shipping canal that linked the Great Lakes to the Ohio River via an artificial waterway. The canal provided traders with access from the Great Lakes all the way to the Gulf of Mexico. Over 460 miles long, it was the longest canal ever built in North America.
