Description
Oil on canvas. In the panorama of Spanish sculpture at the end of the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th, the figure stands out by Mariano Benlliure. Self-taught by training, he belonged to a large family of artists among whom were great figures of painting such as Juan Antonio and José Benlliure, his older brothers. Although today he is known for his work as a sculptor, he frequently cultivated painting throughout throughout his life, but he did not develop it professionally; his teacher being the Valencian painter Francisco Domingo Marqués. His dedication to sculpture began at a very young age when, in 1874, he moved with his family to Madrid. There he began his apprenticeship in various craft workshops but his training as a professional sculptor was completed in Rome, starting in 1881, a city where he came into contact with the most important artistic foundries and where he would perfect his techniques and materials thanks to the knowledge of classical and modern statuary and the study of the work of the great sculptors of the time. his production will be characterized by his detailed and realistic narrative sense; definitively breaking with the idealism of the sculptors of the previous generation. In addition to his painstaking detail, with almost tactile and strongly expressive qualities, his works tend to capture movement and the transitory and dynamic aspects of life. In them we will find a varied theme in which there are bullfighting motifs, religious images, popular types, portraits and memorials. his fame as a sculptor transcended beyond our borders, his works being required from other places in Europe and America, such as the Hispanic Society. The high number of important public positions he assumed, related to the world of culture and Fine Arts, such as the directors of the Spanish Academy in Rome (1917-1919), the General of Fine Arts (1917-1931) or the Museum of Modern Art in Madrid. Similarly, he was a member of the academies of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid, San Carlos in Valencia, San Luis in Zaragoza, San Telmo in Malaga, San Lucas in Rome, Brera in Milan, Carrara and Paris; and he also received important decorations, such as the French Legion of Honor, commander of the order of the Crown of Italy or the great cross of Alfonso X of Spain. In this auction we wanted to remember its importance on the occasion of the celebration of the Benlliure Year, when it is 75 years since the disappearance of the famous sculptor. Various works by him are presented in the tender, made in different disciplines and techniques, which once again demonstrate the high quality of his production. In its cataloging, we would like to thank the Mariano Benlliure Foundation for their help, and in particular Lucrecia Enseñat Benlliure. Signed, dated and dedicated to Félix Eznarriaga in the upper right corner. Splendid portrait in the which shows the model seated, looking at the viewer and wearing a white dress. The plastic and lighting of the work closely recalls the works of his great friend, the painter Joaquín Sorolla. From the documentation preserved, we know that this portrait was painted in Villalba, during several sessions, on the estate known as "Los Rosales" owned by the Rodrigañez family. The Rodrigañez couple maintained a good relationship of friendship with Mariano Benlliure, fostered thanks to the neighborhood relationship that took place in this town where the Benlliures had the "Villa Genarito" residence; whose name referred to the performance of Lucrecia Arana as the first tiple in "Genaro". Measurements: 110 x 80 cm.
