China.- Montanus (Arnoldus) Atlas Chinensis: being a second part of a relation of remarkable passages in two embassies from the East-India Company of the United Provinces, to the vice-roy Singlamong and General Taising Lipovi, and to Konchi, Emperor of China and East-Tartary, translated by John Ogilby, first edition in English, engraved additional pictorial title (bound after letterpress title), letterpress title in red and black, 2 engraved double-page maps and 30 plates only (of 38), all but 5 double-page or folding, includes the large folding view of Hocsieu, engraved illustrations, 4 folding engraved plates form another later work bound in, words 'Second & Third' neatly cut from additional title and repaired verso, map 'Imperium Sinicum' torn and repaired, with small loss to border and part of title cartouche at lower left-hand corner, marginal repairs to plates, a few short tears, offsetting, some spotting and light staining, lightly browned (including plates), modern green crushed moroco, spine in compartments and with rather basic burgundy leather label [Cordier, Sinica 2349; Landwehr VOC 545; Lust 525; Löwendahl 145 (note); Wing D242], folio, Printed by Tho. Johnson for the author, 1671. sold not subject to return.

⁂ First edition in english of a work by Olfert Dapper, first published the year before in Dutch, and mistakenly ascribed by Ogilby to Arnoldus Montanus.

Provenance: Sir William Maynard Gomm (two 19th century engraved armorial bookplates).
