The word 'petrified' comes from the Greek word 'rock' or 'stone'. Petrified wood is essentially fossil wood where the organic materials have been replaced by a series of minerals with quartz being predominant. Impurities in the quartz silica, contribute to the color variation. This process takes place underground in an oxygen-free environment where mineral rich water flows over the organic sediment deposits. The present functional object centers on a large cross-section slab of red petrified wood from the most desireable Arizona deposit. Inlaid expertly into a cherry wood surround, stained an aesthetic black color to serve as a distinguished and unique coffee table. Measuring 92 x 80 x 40 cm
