Description
Tranche de bois pétrifié «bois de Colla»
Petrified 'Colla' Wood Slab
Eocene
Zile District, Tokat Province
Turkey
This beautiful rip-cut style slab reveals the full spectrum of colors and picturesque patterns often attributed to this rare and unusual type of petrified wood. Known as 'Colla' Wood in homage to the presence of Chrysocolla in the preservation of the botanical fossil, this is simply visually stunning material. This particular slab portrays its colors much like a painting, a natural display of ocean blues and earthy browns, ember reds and pearly white over the reflective polished surface – a true work of lapidary art.
The most distinct blues and greens are mainly attributed to azurite and malachite with many pieces containing a variety of minerals including chalcedony, hematite and in some cases even volborthite. This type of petrified wood is relatively new to the market having only been discovered in 2012 near the Black Sea in Zile, Turkey. It has since become very popular and prized by collectors. Only a very small percentage of the material originating in this location can be considered to be in the finest category of the present specimen. Measuring 35 x 25 cm
