Description
The auction featuring items from the Saul Brandman Foundation. Mask in polychrome carved wood fabrication, made by the Pende tribe. Region of origin: DemocraticRepublic of Congo, Africa. This mask is a Mbuya mask, which is associated with male circumcision rites. The face of the mask is in red tone, and there is a carved unibrow above the eyes. Below the face, there is a tongue-shaped beard with a vegetal fiber surround, and there is an ebony and white tone design on the wood of the beard. The head is wearing a helmet with woven grass fibers over burlap. The eyes, nose, and mouth are closed. Themask itself measures eighteen inches tall by nine inches wide by six inches deep, and the clear acrylic stand measures two inches tall by seven inches wide by five inches deep.19.5in(49.5cm) W:7in(17.7cm)
