Chinese Ming Dynasty Chenghua Blue and White Qilin Porcelain Plate. The plate has a broad wide central interior, rounded mouth lip, thick and large, raised on correspondence footed ring base slight concave. Hand painted ornamentations are rendered in clean white base color which contrast against blue fine color, depicted of two mythical beast Qilin flying through scrolling ruyi and flaming vapors. Qilin are extraordinarily beautiful creatures, sparkling like gems and adorned in flames. With their scaly bodies and horned heads, they resemble Chinese dragons, but their legs terminate in delicate hooves, rather than the dragon’s vicious paws, and their tails are lion - like instead of serpentine. Whatever their special attraction, they always move gracefully and dazzle the mortals who see them.The underside unglazed, revealed the pale - creme ground revealed and dark greyish brown spotted firing marks and edge - cut foot rim.
