Chancay Painted Wood Figures - Male, Female
Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A pair of Chancay / Huacho figures likely representing a husband and wife, both carved from wood, painted in red and black hues, and adorned with gauze turbans and textile wraps covering their bodies save where anatomy is exposed (Andean artisans are known for their textile production). Clearly the Chancay artisans employed a more primitive carving technique relative to the more advanced textile technique; however, the minimalist lines of the forms boast a certain charm and to the Huacho culture, the communicative and symbolic powers of these figures were most important. Size of each figure (both are relatively similar): 4.5" W x 14.5" H (11.4 cm x 36.8 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Derek Robinson collection, UK; ex-Stoddart collection, Oakton, VA, USA, acquired late 1960's
