An antique Knights of Pythias ceremonial sword with an engraved blade and etched owner initials. Produced by the M.C. Lilley and Co., Columbus, Ohio. Circa the late 19th or early 20th century. The sword has a wire wrapped leather handle and a knight head pommel crowned with a lion. A guard features the initials FCB which stand for the Pythian motto Friendship, Charity, Benevolence. The sword owned by a member of the Uniformed Rank as the guard is inscribed with the initials UR, and a lily. Comes with an original scabbard with a chased Roman soldier figurine in relief, letterings FCB, and a decorative bottom with a lily. The Knights of Pythias is a fraternal organization and secret society founded in Washington, D.C., on 19 February 1864. The Knights of Pythias is the first fraternal organization to receive a charter under an act of the United States Congress. It was founded by Justus H. Rathbone, who had been inspired by a play by the Irish poet John Banim about the legend of Damon and Pythias.
