A scarce volume, with seven listings in OCLC/WorldCat, only one of which in a U.S. institution. Originally published in 1865. According to Charles William Henry Wyman, "A valuable work on color printing by the steam press, intended for the use of machine minders. The author, a practical printer, who here records his own experience, holds that color work produced on the steam press need not be in the least inferior to that printed on the hand-press, and by way of illustration he appends forty-eight plates of examples which have been entirely executed on the machine. The first edition of this work was much more elementary as regards its mechanical execution than the edition of 1874, the typography and press work of which (both executed under the author's supervision) speak highly for his technical ability. The specimens at the end are of unusual excellence for their careful printing and the exactness of the register. The colors themselves are clean, bright and judiciously contrasted." B&W I, p. 354. Beautifully printed; each signature of the text is framed by a different colored border. The first 16 plates are specimens of different colors, five to a plate; the remainder are exemplars of various forms of color printing, including printing with gold, rainbow printing ('iris-farben'), embossing, etc. Bookplate of Otto Zeilinger, dated 1920.
