Description
North Hatfield, Massachusetts and New York City: Pennyroyal Caxton Press, 1999. In two volumes. First and limited edition, #399/400 numbered copies (from a total edition of 430 copies), signed by Barry Moser on leaf following colophon. Folio. Text printed in two columns in red and in black. Illustrated with over 230 wood-engravings by Moser. Publisher's vellum-covered boards, stamped in gilt; top edges trimmed, other edges untrimmed; each in original gray cloth fall-down-back boxes with printed paper labels.
A magnificent Pennyroyal Press production of the King James Bible, with over 230 beautifully wood-engraved illustrations by Barry Moser, and the first Bible since Gustav Dore's La Sainte Bible (1865) to be designed and fully illustrated by a single artist. The type, Galliard-Moser, was designed by Matthew Carter specifically for this project, and the pages were composed and printed by Bradley Hutchinson of Digital Letterpress in Austin, Texas, after Moser's designs and specifications. Completely printed on Zerkall Bible paper, manufactured specifically for this project, and bearing the unique watermark of the Pennyroyal Caxton Press. The large vellum bindings were executed by the studios of Claudia Cohen and Sarah Creighton, of Easthampton, Massachusetts. The magnum opus for Moser and Pennyroyal, this surely ranks as one the of the highest points of private press work of the 20th century.
