Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Peru (Ecuador border), Chavin Maranon, ca. 900 to 200 BCE. A charming ceramic vessel depicting a lobster or crayfish found in the Maranon Jungle, a region far from the ocean. The crustacean has an abstract visage with nub eyes and elongated mouth ridge. Interestingly atop the head is what might be a mask with a stylized zoomorphic visage; partially sculpted, partially painted in vivid red and cream colors. This lobster may represent a transformation ritual or creator deity, such as Ai Apaec. This vessel is superb and absolutely astonishing! Size: 7.5" L x 4.5" W x 5.5" H (19 cm x 11.4 cm x 14 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, before 2010; ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, acquired in the 1950s to 1960s
