A mid 19th century rosewood and brass inlaid mantel timepiece the dial signed William Flagg, Ramsgate
the dial signed William Flagg, Ramsgate
the pedimented rectangular case flanked by spire finials, the sides glazed, the 4.25' cusp arched painted dial with Roman numerals, the brass four pillar movement with anchor escapement, with pendulum, one foot lacking, 33cm high
Condition
In good decorative condition commensurate with age, the case with a few fine cracks and scratches and with some wear to the extremities, the obelisk type finials to either side of the pedimented case are slightly loose of their screws the brass inlay with dulling to the sides of the door, the sides with some fine splits below the glaze apertures which have one or two scratches and small blemishes, the base with a slightly open joint on the right hand side where the hinge pin is situated, the feet with some dulling to the brass, the painted dial has been refreshed, has fading and wear to the Roman numerals and signature, and there are chips through the paint around the edges of the winding hole, the hands possibly over painted also, the door without key (rear and front) the movement appearing to be in relatively good condition with some dulling and a few fine scratches, when the pendulum is release d it appears to be ticking and going although not tested for timekeeping, when the movement is wound it winds smoothly but there is no winding key. The rosewood now attractively faded and when the door is opened you can see a dented mark which makes an allowance for a clip holding the frame of the glazed door, one brass foot missing from base.
