Description
Nevada is a gambling state and the 5 of Diamonds card seemed to be lucky for the owners and investors of this company! EARLY number 10 for 25,000 SHARES to W. E. Staunton on February 8, 1908. This is a very large number! Signed by president R. E. L. Windle and secretary J Dunn. Underground mining vignette. Fancy scroll work. "Incorporated 1907 Winnemucca" in stamped seal. This is a very rare dateline. This mine was located at Rosebud 50 miles northwest of Winnemucca. The district showed promise in 1907, but was dead by 1909. President Windle was a newspaper man (original proprietor of the Goldfield News), mining man, military officer in Nevada and chess enthusiast. Staunton was from a pioneer Winnemucca family known for their saddle shop. Staunton was also an expert marksman. Biography of Windle, Staunton and descriptions of mine, city and district included. As much hype as there was around this mine, I found no indication of any real production. Maybe the 5 of Diamonds was not a good luck card after allDate: 1908Country (if not USA): State: NevadaCity: Rosebud, HumboldtProvenance: Joe Elcano Nevada Mining Stock Collection
