Description
Extremely rare. Possibly the only one known. Athens Ledge, Eastern Slope Mining District, Ormsby Co., Nevada (printed to the left of vignette). The information attached gives us a new mining district or, at least, an extension of what was thought of as the Eastern Slope district. Incorporated March 1, 1866. # 51, issued for 50 shares to company secretary Charles Ver Nooy(?) on May 1, 1866 in Ellenville, New York. Signed by Ver Nooy and the president (illegible). Not cancelled. Blue border and print, and three vignettes: dog next to safe (top center), dog's head (bottom center) and allegorical woman (left side). Printed by DH Prime, NY. 25 cent adhesive stamp attached on the right. Folds, stain top center. We could find no information on this company on CDNC, newspapers.com, or Holabird indexes. In 2011, Holabird-Kagin Americana did sell an Athens Gold and Silver Mining Company Stock (1865) that was also from this district and most likely on the same ledge as our company.Date: 1866Country (if not USA): State: NevadaCity: Genoa, OrmsbyProvenance: Joe Elcano Nevada Mining Stock Collection
