Beautiful Hand-Colored Engraved Map by Johann Homann "TOTIUS AMERICAE SEPTENTRIONALIS ET MERIDIONALIS NOVISSIMA REPRAESENTATIO..."
c. 1720 Hand-Colored Map titled, "TOTIUS AMERICAE SEPTENTRIONALIS ET MERIDIONALIS NOVISSIMA REPRAESENTATIO...", by Johann Baptista Homann, Nuremberg, Framed, Choice Very Fine.
The first Map of America published by the Homann family shown with heavy detailing, including a depiction of California as a Large Island, Double-Page measuring 19" x 22" (by sight), framed to 27.5" x 31.25", with original vibrant color. North and South America shown as known at the time. Much of the American northwest is designated as unknown territory and California is a peninsula. There are two lovely, uncolored cartouches. The engraved title cartouche, at lower left, shows Native American Indians and Europeans; a village with houses and windmills is at left, and "New World" animals and plants are displayed in the foreground. The cartouche at upper left shows Native American Indians, a missionary and a mythological figure. Inside the cartouche, written in Latin, is information on the exploration of America. Quite bring with bold color, some light soiling at upper left with a couple minor light humidity stains along the centerfold. Professionally matting and decoratively modern framed with the Map protected under UV Plexiglas. Overall, an excellent attractive map, framed and ready for display.
