20th C. American Folk Art Wood Cane Bird Head Handle

Item Details

Description

North America, United States, ca. 20th century CE. A lovely wooden cane hand-carved from a tree branch with the handle in the form of a bird head, all adorned in areas of crimson paint that nicely contrasts the natural bark and woodgrain surfaces. Formed from the innate curve of the wood, the handle presents as a gnarled avian head with sizeable knots of coarse skin surmounted by a high crest, while the curved and pointed beak projects outward from one side, allowing for easy gripping of the implement. One side of the head has been smoothed also for the comfort of its wielder. The slender body of the cane twists and turns with protruding knobs where twigs have been broken off throughout and areas where the bark has been stripped or the surface is incised with decorative details. Size: 3.9" W x 35" H (9.9 cm x 88.9 cm)
