[xlviii], 731, [1] pp. Text in Latin and Greek in parallel columns. Title in red and black with woodcut device. Head- and tail-pieces, initials, (from the 1566 version). 2 (of 4) folding plates. (Folio) 35.5x22.5 cm (14x9"), period full vellum. Second edition (but first Estienne edition).



The two large folding plates that are present show A Plan of Babylon [and] The Tower of Babel. Called "Edition Secunda", this is the first Estienne edition, it combines the Latin and Greek texts in parallel columns. Includes excerpts from Xenophon, Plutarch and others. Henri Estienne, Jr. (Latinized as Stephanus) was a humanist scholar and printer who carried on the Estienne family printing business achieving a high level of accuracy and gaining a reputation for textual criticism. The second edition corrected and enlarged the 1566 edition. Lacks the 12 leaves of index at the end and 2 of the 4 folding plates. Schreiber; #222; Renouard; p. 155, no. 3. Rubber stamp of previous owner on front free endpaper.

Condition
Some soiling and wear to vellum, dampstaining at lower left corner affecting vellum somewhat and several leaves including title page; minor worm trail on front free endpaper and title page, a few minor tears and creases; very good.
