London: for John Norton, 1607. Folio (11" x 7.5"), [18], 217, [7], 229-358, [2, errata] pp., wanting initial blank leaf. 20th c. 1/2 morocco over cloth, lettered in gilt, light scuffs to extremities. Ink-stamp to both title leaves, small old label to pastedown reading "Presented to the Rendel Harris Library," a few notations in places (some early ink, mostly pencil), errata leaf at rear foxed, overall a rather clean and nice copy, Very Good. ************************* FIRST ENGLISH EDITION of Estienne's Apologie pour Herodote, originally published in 1566. Estienne was attempting to reassert Herodotus's historical value and importance, and he did this through comparing ancient with modern wonders. But his work developed into a satire on modern times and was seen as objectionable to the church in Geneva. Estienne was arrested, tried, and forced to remove the offending portions.
