Description
Native American, Southwestern United States, Hopi, ca. 1998 to 2009 CE. "Wolf" by Ernie Moore or Quanhoyeoma (Hopi, 1934 to 2009). Painted wood and feather. Signed "Wolf Katcina" / ERNiE" on underside of base. A delightful wooden Wolf Kachina doll shown standing atop slightly bent legs on an integral plinth, hand-painted in vibrant hues with plumed decoration adorning the head. His fierce visage faces forward with a projecting tapered snout, target-motif eyes, huge, pointed ears, and a wide mouth held open to expose 2 rows of sharp, jagged teeth, all crowned by black and tan plumes that protrude from the sides and tips of his ears. Elaborately detailed geometric and abstract designs embellish his clothing with bands of polka-dots wrapping around his arms and legs. Size: 2.2" W x 8" H (5.6 cm x 20.3 cm)
Ernie Moore was a gifted carver who did not begin making kachina dolls until age 63 yet won many awards in his 11-year career, including being designated an "Arizona Living Treasure" in 2005 and "Best in Show" at the 2003 Heard Museum fair for a 24-piece set now owned by the American Museum of Natural History. This work is likely from earlier in his career as he later began to sign his works with his Hopi name, Quanhoyeoma, rather than Ernie.
