Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A leaded bronze statuette of the messenger god Mercury (Greek Hermes) - skillfully cast with some of his mythological attributes. He stands in the nude displaying a contrapposto pose and holding his herald's staff or caduceus in his left hand. As messenger of the gods, he wears wings at the side of his cap or petasos. Note the drapery folds of his traveler’s cloak, a chlamys, hanging over his left forearm. Finally, a small creature sits by his right foot - perhaps a ram, one of the animals traditionally associated with Mercury. A charming rendering of this traveling messenger god with rich patina! Size: 1.375" W x 2.8" H (3.5 cm x 7.1 cm); 3.1" H (7.9 cm) on included custom stand.
