Description

George Ross, Declaration Signer, AES on 1778 Promissory Note

A promissory note from Abraham Marsh of Elizabeth Borough, New Jersey, to George Ross for £22. 2pp (front and back), measuring 6.5" x 8.25", n.p., dated November 7, 1778. Signed and endorsed on verso by George Ross, who has written "I assign all my Right and Title to the within Bond and the Monies due thereon unto Mr. Philip Brasher or his Order." Additional docketing on verso as well. The document has flattened folds, along with uneven toning and foxing throughout. Some areas of dampstaining. Boldly signed by Ross.

George Ross Jr. (1730-1779) was a Founding Father and signed both the Articles of Association in 1774 and the United States Declaration of Independence as a representative of Pennsylvania in 1776. He served as a colonel in the Pennsylvania militia during the early years of the Revolution before becoming vice president of the first constitutional convention for Pennsylvania. Although loyal to the crown, Ross had become disenfranchised with Tory politics and finally backed the Patriot cause. He was the last of the Pennsylvania delegates to sign the Declaration of Independence. Ross was also the uncle of John Ross, who married Betsy Griscom in 1773, giving Betsy her famous married name: Betsy Ross. In 1952, he, George Washington, and Robert Morris appeared on a three-cent stamp commemorating Betsy Ross.
