1st millennium B.C. A bronze oil lamp formed as a bull with its legs trussed beneath the body and neck extended; large filling hole on the upper face, nozzle formed as the beast's mouth. 171 grams, 11 cm (4 1/4 in.). Acquired 1970s-1996. Property of a North American collector. London collection, 2016. The bull is in the pose associated with the ceremonial tauroctony with neck extended; associated with the cult of Mithras in the Roman period but earlier with Cybele, Nike and others. [No Reserve]
