Item Details
Description
  • Title: 1865 Colton's Map of Oil Regions of West Virginia -- J.H. Colton's Map Showing the Oil Region of West Virginia : and the location therein of the lands belonging to the Little Kanawha & Elk River Petroleum and Mining Company & their relative position to those parts of west Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio and Kentucky where oil is found.
  • Cartographer: J Colton
  • Year/Place: 1865, New York
  • Dimensions: 20.4 X 16.7 in.
  • Description: This is a historically important map of the early oil and gas production in America. Native Americans and later early European settlers recognized and perhaps used as fuel the "burning springs" and outflows of petroleum on the Little Kanawha, Kanawha, and Big Sandy rivers. The first commercial oil production in West Virginia is thanks to Rathbone brothers drilling for salt by the Little Kanawha River at a stream called Burning Springs Run but hit petroleum. They were able to produce 200 barrels per day by 1859. The Burning Springs oil field was one of only two oil fields in America prior to the Civil War. News spread fast to others and the oil and gas drilling era started in West Virginia with Parkersburg as the chief city of the oil market. The map identifies Burning Springs Run about 30 miles from Parkersburg. Further southeast about 30 miles are the holdings of the now closed Little Kanawha & Elk River Petroleum and Mining Co. colored in light pink. There is an amazing amount of detail in the map as to topography, rivers, streams, roads, railroads, canals, towns and cities. This is a very rare item: no OCLC listed library has a copy; only references are in American Antiquarian Society database and two sales by a Map dealer and an Auction are noted.
