Description
**Originally Listed At $500**

South Asia, India, ca. 19th century CE. A repousse brass panel featuring an enshrined Lord Virabhadra - a form of Shiva - and attendants under an arch. The cast plaque features 2 integral suspension loops on the verso. The image depicts a four-armed Lord Virabhadra, the warrior hero, wearing a knee length garment, a crown with the hooded Naga serpent, and garlands. In each hand are weapons, including axes. At his side is a Brahma and ram headed Daksha and an ornate aureole arches up and in the center is the face of a lion. Size: 5.875" W x 7.25" H (14.9 cm x 18.4 cm); 7.8" H (19.8 cm) on included custom stand.

Virabhadra, an incarnation of Shiva, was created after Shiva's wife, Sati, was not invited to a great sacrifice given by her father Daksha. Sati, being greatly humiliated, went to the banquet and threw herself on the sacrificial fire. When Shiva heard of his wife's death, he tore a hair from his head and threw it to the ground. Virabhadra, a great hero-warrior, arose from this hair. He cut off Daksha's head in his rage and hurled it into the sacrificial fire. After the other gods calmed Shiva down, Daksha's head was replaced by that of a goat or in this case, a ram. Daksha later became a devotee of Shiva.
