Description
[BROADSIDE] BATTLE OF THE NILE. L&W 1798 [BROADSIE] An Exact Representation of the English & French Fleets under the Command of Rear Admiral Sr. Horatio Nelson K.B. & Admiral Brueys off the Mouth of the Nile, on the 1st of August 1798.Publisher: Luarie & Whittle, No 53 Fleet Street. Age toned, fold lines open here and there, couple of internal chips, one affecting text on Fri[g]ates, the g is missing. Dark brown stain spots to middle far right. Professionally re-mounted on linen. Piece of previously mounting cloth, here present, with title and date in red ink. NOTE: an image of illegible writing in pencil will be provided; this writing was discovered when removing previous mounting cloth, an image was taken. There is a pencil drawing of a ship along the far left and under the French line with the ship flag resembling more the English ship flag may looked like before the colouring, in sight of this the present owner of the broadside whom purchased it at an estate auction, held at the home of a descendent of Henry Walker. Also purchased at the time was an "Admiral Howe Medal" of 1794. The consigner believes that Henry Walker possibly came from a Royal Navy seafaring family and that the broadside originally belonged to, and was possibly "corrected" by an actual participant in the Battle of the Nile. Archival information may prove that the "correction" is of historical importance.
