Description
DESCRIPTION: A 19th century In-the-manner-of Charles Louis-Lucien Muller (French, 1815-1892) "The Roll Call of the Last Victims of the Terror" relined oil painting on board. The original of this work was exhibited, under the title 'L'Appel des dernieres victimes de la Terreur a la prison Saint Lazare le 7 thermidor an II (27th July 1794)", at the Salon des artistes francais in Paris in 1850. This historical painting depicts the crowded interior of the Parisian prison of la Conciergerie, where a bailiff of the Republican Government reads out the names of the prisoners to be executed. The color palette adopted is dark and cold, reflecting the gloominess of the subject. A republican French flag hangs loose from the ceiling and waves its three colors and written "Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite ou la morte". The meditative figure, isolated in the middle of the scene, depicts the poet Andre Chenier. The focal point of the whole crowd is the tall bailiff, who stands on the center left of the semicircle of bodies. The prisoners are dressed with clothes that are fancy and elaborate dresses, but that now are torn and dirty emphasizing the role of luck in mans life. Framed.
