Description
Fine grouping of four A.E.S.'s of Union generals on a single document, the integral leaf of an A.L.S.,1p. 4to., Harpers Ferry, Oct. 8, 1862 in which Maj. B. C. Brooks of the 64th N.Y. Vols. recommends three officers and non-coms for promotion. On the verso appear, in order, A.E.S.'s of: Brigadier General JOHN C. CALDWELL (1833-1912) who led a brigade in the Peninsula and at Fredericksburg, who approves and forwards the letter, Brigadier General WINFIELD SCOTT HANCOCK (1824-1886) who faced Pickett's charge at Gettysburg, also approving and forwarding the letter, Major General DARIUS COUCH (1822-1897) who fought at Fredericksburg, Antietam and Chancellorsville, also forwarding the request; and Brigadier General JAMES A. HARDIE (1823-1876), who forwards the document to the Governor of New York. Near fine.
