Description
(1885 - 1966) American admiral, Commander in Chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet during World War II and largely responsible for the successful 'island-hopping' campaign against the Japanese. Black ink signature on the back of a matchbox cover, 4.5 x 1.5 in., adding his rank ‘Fleet Admiral USN’. The matchbook was made in honor of Nimitz with his name and rank printed on the front along with his five-star flag. There is a minor hole under the flag that does not intrude on the signature, else very good. Lot includes a photo, 8 x 10 in. b/w, depicting Nimitz signing the Japanese surrender documents aboard the U.S.S. Missouri.
