Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chavin culture, Tembladera phase, ca. 800 to 500 BCE. A stunning abstract polychrome hand-built stirrup vessel in the form of a jaguar! The rotund body rests on thick delineated legs that are outstretched with petite toes on each paw. At the front is an applied head with a stylized feline face: perked ears, bulging eyes, and bared teeth. While animalistic - there is something human about the upturned nose- perhaps hinting at the transformative power shamans possessed. The brightly colored surface is painted in red-orange, yellow ochre, and white hues on an umber brown ground, adorned with incised roundels on front and back legs. This coloration is achieved by a high firing followed by the application of polychrome paint post firing. Although ancient, this vessel looks like a contemporary work of art - a highly desirable and colorful example! Size: 8" L x 6" W x 10.5" H (20.3 cm x 15.2 cm x 26.7 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, acquired 1995 to 2010; ex-Splendors of the World, Haiku, Hawaii, USA, before 2010; ex- Alexander Alcavedo collection, Fred Leighton, New York City, New York, USA, 1960-2000
