Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Peru, Wari / Huari culture, ca. 800 to 1000 CE. What a fun vessel - unless of course you were the poor man getting eaten by the jaguar! Large pottery jar in the form of a crouching jaguar with a hapless male figure clutched firmly in its claws and jaws, body of the gentleman under the body of the jaguar. The body of the jar is painted in thick kaolin slip in shades of red, tan, and brown, spots of the jaguar in a peanut form - a legume very important to the ancient cultures of Peru. A fun, albeit somewhat macabre, jar! Size: 10.5" L x 9" H (26.7 cm x 22.9 cm)

Provenance: ex-private collection of Lupita Tovar, silent screen actress of the 1930's, Bel-Air, California USA.
