Note

Robert Peel (1750-1830), 1st Baronet, was a British politician mostly famous for establishing London's Metropolitan Police Service (today known as modern day police) during his time as Home Secretary in Lord Liverpool’s Tory Cabinet. Today, members of the British Police are still called 'Bobbies' in direct reference to Sir Robert Peel himself. He was the father of Sir Robert Peel who went on to become Prime Minister of the United Kingdom twice. The present work represents Peel seated in his office. It follows the composition of Lawrence's original composition which once hung at Drayton Manor. It is understood the portrait was painted for Ann Peel, the only sister of Sir Robert.
