Description
Magna Graecia, South Italic Colonies, Campania, ca. 3rd century BCE. A gorgeous wheel-thrown Calene ware skyphos of elegant form exhibiting its characteristic black glaze and impressed patterns. The vessel features a squat, tiered foot, a hemispherical body with upturned walls, and a pair of slender handles that curve and arch out to the sides. Within the center of the basin is a quartet of petite stamped palmettes with radiating upper leaves, and surrounding the vegetal gathering are 4 concentric rings comprised of gently slanted frets. The entire vessel is covered in lustrous black glaze that has developed areas of silvery iridescence. Size (w/ handles): 6.8" L x 4.25" W x 2.8" H (17.3 cm x 10.8 cm x 7.1 cm)

Condition
Minor abrasions and nicks, with very light encrustations, otherwise intact and excellent. Great preservation to stamped motifs within basin, and nice silvery iridescence across glazed surfaces. Old inventory label beneath foot.
