The private collection of a Brazilian industrialist, Rio de Janeiro
Born in Romania in 1895, Marcel Janco was one of the main founders of the Dada Movement which opposed war, aggression and changing world culture. These artists set out to challenge Western culture and art, which they considered obsolete in the face of the carnage of World War I. Janco's eclectic style brilliantly combines abstract and figurative elements of an expressionist nature. In 1941, he moved to the land that would become the nation of Israel in 1948. Here he painted idyllic images in watercolour and oil and was captivated by the exotic landscapes of the East. In 1953, Janco established the artists' village known as Ein Hod, which now houses the Janco Dada Museum. In 1967 he received the Israel Painting Prize. In the last years of his life, he worked together with friends to build the Janco Dada Museum, dying just ten months after the museum opened in 1984.
