Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A fine, hand-built pottery figure shown seated with both legs bent; one propped before her and the other folded beneath her. Capped by a tubular headband and chin-length coiffure, she gazes forward from incised, almond-shaped eyes above a pinched nose, a straight mouth, and a square jaw. Her flat body displays sloped shoulders, risen breasts, delineated genitalia, and outstretched arms with the right hand placed on her knee and her left resting atop her bulbous - perhaps pregnant - belly. Incised striations adorn the area from her stomach to her knees, possibly representing a sheer loincloth or ceremonial scarification, while a beaded necklace and thick armbands further decorate her otherwise bare upper body. Size: 3.8" W x 6" H (9.7 cm x 15.2 cm)

Provenance: private Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA collection; ex-Dr. David Harner collection, Springdale, Arkansas, USA, acquired between the 1950s to 1960s
