George Washington Nicholson (American / New Jersey, 1832-1912). Oil on Panel painting - Signed lower left. Depicts the peril and tragic sinking of the SS Ville du Havre.Panel size 24x36 gilt framed to overall size of 30x43. On 15 November 1873, Ville du Havre (Originally commissioned Napoleon III) sailed from New York with 313 passengers and crew on board, She was bound for Havre de Grâce, About halfway across the Atlantic ocean, she collided with the iron clipper, Loch Earn at about 2 a.m. 22 November. 12 minutes later226 crew and passengers perished. The crew of Loch Earn and 87 surviving passengers of the Ville du Havre were rescued later that day by an American ship. Condition Very Fine.Condition: Very Fine
