Edwin Megargee (American, 1883-1958) Painting. Oil on canvas - Signed lower left dated 1932. Depiction of a farmer and his Clydesdale horses plowing the field. Canvas measures 32x45 set in a gilt frame to overall size of 39x52.Edwin Megargee was an animal painter, illustrator, and etcher. He was born in 1883 in Mt. Airy , Pennsylvania.He was a breeder and painter of gun dogs and wrote and illustrated several illustrated dog dictionaries. He also painted horses, cattle and cock-fighting scenes. The running greyhound logo for the Greyhound Bus Co. was designed by Megargee. Several of his game-shooting scenes appeared in "Field & Stream" throughout the 1940s-50s. He specialized in animal portraiture, with a strong emphasis on purebred canines.
Condition
Painting has craquelure to the surface and may require cleaning. Repairable tear to upper right. Frame has some losses to paint.
