Gabriel Leonhard von Berckholtz (1781-1863) was a Baltic nobleman and wealthy merchant in Riga. For health reasons he moved with his family to Karlsruhe in 1828. In 1833 he bought a 4.5 hectare vineyard from the state of Baden, including the ruins of Ortenberg Castle, which he had rebuilt. After completion in 1843, he lived with his family in the castle.
