Description
Mug with a view of Ortenberg Castle, 2nd half of the 19th century. On the cylindrical wall frontal rectangular field with polychrome and finely executed panoramic view of Ortenberg Castle, in the background the Rhine Valley and the Vosges Mountains. Inscribed ''Ortenberg in der Ortenau'' and ''G. Mohn 10 X 1811''. On reverse coat of arms with inscription ''Leonhard v. Bergholtz''. 9.8 cm high. Lip min. dam. Gabriel Leonhard von Berckholtz (1781-1863) was a Baltic nobleman and wealthy merchant in Riga. For health reasons he moved with his family to Karlsruhe in 1828. In 1833 he bought a 4.5 hectare vineyard from the state of Baden, including the ruins of Ortenberg Castle, which he had rebuilt. After completion in 1843, he lived with his family in the castle.
