Description
Cylindrical cup with Napoleon Heinrich Poltz, Karlovy Vary, mid-19th c. Bottom cut star. The lower half of the wall is decorated by diagonal roller cut and polished spheres. Above it is deep cut, partly polished decoration: Napoleon on horseback, next to him a soldier, in the background two groups of horsemen. Bottom right signed ''POLTZ''. On the reverse monogram between palm and laurel branches. Lip edge min. bumped. H. 13,9 cm The cut was probably made after a painting showing Napoleon and his generals retreating after the Russian campaign. Heinrich Poltz (1820-1865) was acquitted by his master Mattoni in 1837 and settled back in Karlovy Vary in the early 1850s, where he worked until his death. Lit.: Pazaurek/Philippovich, Gläser der Empire- und Biedermeierzeit, 1976. p. 115.
