Provenance:
English private collection.
Hampel Fine Art Auctions, Munich, September 20th, 2012, nos.663 and 664, illus.
Jean-David Cahn, Basel, acquired at the above sale.
Sir Peter Jonas (1946-2020) Collection, acquired from the above in May 2013.

Not to be confused with Tritons, the Ikhthyokentauroi (Ichthyocentaurs) were a pair of centaurine sea-gods with the upper bodies of men, the lower forequarters of horses and fishtails, their brows crowned with a pair of lobster-claw horns. The pair of fish-centaurs were called Bythos (Sea-Depths) and Aphros (Sea-Foam), they were brothers of the wise centaur Chiron and like him were perhaps regarded as wise teachers.

The brothers have mixed origin stories with some saying they are the sons of Poseidon and Amphitrite, or even the Titan Kronos and Nymph Philyra. They are also said to be derived from the Fish-Deities of Syrian mythology which carried Astarte ashore after her birth. In Greek mythology they are also credited with witnessing the birth and assisted in the upbringing of Aphrodite. As a reward for the above the brothers were placed amongst the stars as the constellation Pisces.

Condition
With a double metal bar attached to the back horizontally which slots into a reinforced plate ready for mounting.

The panel has been repaired from several fragments. A v-shaped section of marble is missing between the centre left sea-centaur and the left nereid from the central section (max width – 18cm, max height – 20.5cm). The curved crack running down to the baseline has some infill.

Overall the edges suffer some chipping and losses. The faces to all the figures are either worn or damaged. Overall there is wear and chipping but overall outline of the figures, depth of relief and the visual understanding of the scene is clear.

The panel appears to be repaired with a horizontal band through the principal scene where it meets the waves from the left hand side of the panel across to the erote on the furthest right of the panel. Along this band there are some neat, barely visible joins along some patches of more prominent restoration as described below.

Starting from the left hand side of the panel, there is a vertical band of repair from above the nereids head travelling towards the right through the elbow of the sea-centaur down passing through his rump. The top of this band has the widest section of infill with a further area of infill in the rump of the sea-centaur. In a vertical line from the rump travelling back through the proper left leg of the nereid and curving down to the base of the ground line there is patch of infill.

Beneath the central left hippocamp stands an erote, beneath the foot of that erote there is a curved band of infill.

Beneath the body of the central right hippocamp there is a section plaster(?) infill in a horizontal band to the erote in front.

Beneath the central left sea-centaur there is a patch of infill.

Between the head of the central right nereid and hippocamp is a v-shaped loss from the top (maximum 3cm wide x 3.5cm deep). There is a vertical line from the base of this chip passing through the neck of the hippocamp to the base of the body of the joining erote. A second smaller v-shaped chip on the top border to the right has a line passing from its base through the arm of the erote, passing left under the body of the erote curving down towards the ground line in front of the hippocamp. Further to the right there is another small v-shaped chip with a vertical line of repair with infill passing left through the part of the body of the sea-centaur and the central section of the nereid's proper right leg.

Weight roughly 280kg inclusive of frame.
