A Roman chalcedony head of a boy
Circa 1st-2nd Century A.D.
With thick wavy curls, swept forward into a fringe the large eyes with drilled pupils, a dimple to either side of the full lips, 1.9cm high

This chalcedony head may have come from a miniature portrait bust such as the chalcedony portrait bust of a young woman in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, acc.no.07.286.125, and is of similar quality and carving to an Imperial Period chalcedony head of Mercury (Hermes), also at the Metropolitan Museum of Art acc.no.1977.187.4.
